Most of them were very progressive for their day. They were the educated elite of their day.

But that the Bill of Rights is appended to the Constitution itself reveals something important - that what occupied the minds of Jefferson and Madison was how to create a new type of government that absolutely was rejecting any hint of monarchy or Church. This was their concern - how to define a nation state on a new paradigm.
