People are STUPID.

The first time around there were actual supply chain issues. This time? People not thinking it through and the media stoking fears with breathless reports. I’ve had more than one person tell me I should get more TP while I can. Since I just broke into a Costco-Pak of TP that ought to last the 2 of us for 3 months or so, I’ve declined to acquire more. But, I was at Costco a couple weeks ago and probably 80% of the carts had TP, paper towels, or both in them.

And even the first time around, the “supply chain issues” were almost entirely demand-driven: mainly due to hoarding behavior: the (somewhat more-credible) fears of people being unable to get “out” to shop for stuff (and not wanting to get caught in a lockdown running out of bogroll) - and the (less-credible) apprehensions that COVID would disrupt production.
Though in the end, the shortages of paper goods still materialized, and still are.
Self-fulfilling prophecy, indeed.
