That depends on where you live. I didn’t need any ID to buy a house, open a bank account, or show proof of residence to register my car. Everyone knows me here.

As for the claims of in-person voter fraud and benefits fraud, every bit of that could be solved with a national ID. Most countries use them.

But when you try to bring that up, you get anti-government wingnuts and a whole bunch of Christians who think that is some sort of satanic plan.

The best method of quelling their fears is also the one they won’t use.

Much of conservatism is like that (sex ed and contraception is the best methods for reducing abortion rates, so they oppose sex ed and contraception).

I meant that in Germany, you need an ID and a registered address to sign most any official document from a lease to an employment contract.

And I know that people in America on both right and left would be up in arms over a national ID or registered address system.

But again, that is why I am frustrated at the entire argument because it allows the conservatives to implement measures that are ostensibly to prevent abuse but obviously intended to disenfranchise.
