re: #160 Alyosha
The biggest mistake the US made was to allow banks to expand out of their traditional role of lending money and enabling people to save money into investing other people’s money. All that deregulation enabled stodgy old banks to become high-flying investors, and greed made those bankers even more creative in finding ways to make boatloads of money off the backs of ordinary citizens. I don’t consider bankers to be any more evil than any other profession. Rather, I place the blame on the legislators who removed just about every restriction on money-making instruments, and after the house of cards fell down, refused to punish the transgressors. For all the talk about new regulations, nothing much has been done to prevent another crisis like the subprime mortgage fiasco that managed to bring the world’s economy into recession. Trump’s Cabinet are just the kind of people who could make it happen.
