Seems like this is common for a lot of shows, particularly in SciFi - where networks always get squeamish about greenlighting more than a season at a time. The nature of TV (at least as it used to exist, streaming may be changing it), is that it allowed shows to meander (even if they were serialized), and suddenly facing an announcement that Season 7 will be the last season, you end up writing that they all really died on the island and that its purgatory or something.*

*Why yes, I am still annoyed by the last season of Lost, why do you ask?

You’re really not going to enjoy anything that happens on Colony then. Writers are feuding, Exec Producer not really engaged, and the whole thing is just flailing.

A lot of this is due to the “Puts” - i.e. how many shows are ordered. When networks would get 22-show Puts, they’d have enough in the bank to pay for a writer to really try to plan out what would happen in a season. That went down to 16 … then 13 … now it’s down to 10 episodes, and very few production companies are willing (or able) to invest time & energy in wireframing out a season.

Exceptions: Marvel and Netflix (although Iron Fist was rushed to fit into production windows)
