One thought is that these days a nominee of either party for President starts with 45%, and it would take a huge scandal or such to get less than that. Trump only added 1.2% to the 45% he was guaranteed.

So, there’s not really 1/3 in the middle. More like 10%. Them, you can work on. But if nothing else, all the elections since 2006 should tell us that the key is motivating your core supporters to get out and vote. It’s how we won 2006, 2008, and 2012. It’s how THEY won 2010 and 2014. Not doing it is how we lost 2016.
