Apparently there was a kerfuffle on FB about the racial makeup of a young woman named “Ivory Bangle Lady” buried in York in the 4th century. Yorkshire Museum basically tells people that Roman Britons were quite diverse and “put a sock in it.”

The blog in the second tweet is definitely worth a read. “Ivory Bangle Lady” was obviously of high status given the jewelry she was buried with (and that she had a stone coffin). And it’s possible that she was an emigrant to Britain from North Africa.

I seriously don’t get why people think the world was this ethnically and racially homozygous place. Hell with my Irish ancestors alone, I can find links to the Normans, natives of the island, & Scottish migrants. My family tree is full of people who lived near borders old and new.
