This rises almost to a founding principle of our country, though. The Pilgrims came here to “escape religious persecution”. The religious persecution they were escaping? The fact that any (Trinitarian) Protestant sect was tolerated in England. The fact that people were allowed to follow any sect other than theirs constituted “persecution”. Not much has changed.
Possibly the first American instance of confusing freedom with power.
Because, without exception, all the religious freedom crap spouted these days is actually about religious power.
