Actually, no.
Newton did quit captaining ships (slave or otherwise) after a nasty storm, but he continued to invest in the trade for several years, and it was some years later that he became active in the abolition movement.
Which doesn’t mean it isn’t a fine hymn-and once he became an abolitionist he was a strong and influential voice.
