I’ve got a book on request at the library-Money: the true history of a made up thing. There’s an NPR interview with the author here. I thought of it because he goes into the history of “goldsmith bankers” and the receipts they issued for gold deposits being “money adjacent” as people began to trade the receipts rather than the actual gold they represented.
