The worst words you can hear in any language are, “But we’ve always done things this way!” My standard smartass response to that is, “Yeah, well, once upon a time we used to toss virgins into volcanoes. You don’t see that anymore, do ya? Because now we know better and we’re not a bunch of primitive screwheads anymore.”

I have no problem with people maintaining traditions. But when those traditions become counterproductive to the functioning of society and ultimately harmful to a society…then it’s time for those traditions to fade into history.
