Er… I’m sorry, but we seem to be constantly talking at cross purposes. My point was that the sort of racism in the South and North was different, and that that actually matters; it takes different efforts to combat different sorts of racism. I don’t know understand anything you mean about not having that luxury; obviously you were confronted with whatever sort of racism that you were, but that doesn’t obviate that there are demonstrably different forms of racism.

Well, that’s a rather limited purview.

So they say. But I’m a non-fiction type of gal, never have been since the grade school years when my peers where into Laura Ingalls Wilder and I was into watching broadcast news; sue me. Re the premise of the book you mentioned, f you want to understand the multiplicities of what, I guess for this convo, “racism”, then I’m your girl.

To counteract and overcome “racism” of every form found in the US, you must move beyond that old Manichaean “north and south” stereotype. It’s good in a certain context, but only goes so far when trying to educate us on our own experience.
