As for our obsession with orifices, what goes in them and what comes out, that is just a human trait that we refuse to grow out of.
In this regards I found Japan to be rather different that American culture. They never really had a Victorian period in regards to mores. Still, women were (and still are in some ways) treated as property. But sex itself has a lot less mystique and shaming associated with it than in American culture.
