It may be apocryphal, but, one of them might have been John O. Meusebach and a group of German settlers at the Adelsverein land grant near Fredericksburg, Texas in the late 1840’s.

From what I understand, they reportedly asked permission from the local Comanches to settle there. It was granted, and supposedly, that branch of the Comanche Nation generally left them alone after that.

But Texans probably know more about this story, than a Virginian. :)

They rarely brought up German settlers in Texas history because they were generally anti-slavery.
