TBH I thought Christie would never make it in the GOP primary because I thought GOP primary voters preferred low key assholes like Ted Cruz that code their rhetoric in religion.

Yeah, as a resident here, I thought the same thing. Turns out that GOP voters did want that, just louder and more racist than what Christie provided.

I will say this for ol’ Chris: early on at least, if he had that inherit racist streak a lot of conservatives seem to have, he hid it well.

Among other things, he appointed a Muslim judge, which did not go over well with the GOP mouth breathers here. I’m not recalling any specific dog whistling on Christie’s part, either as governor or POTUS candidate. Probably wrong on that, though.
