One thing that surprised me, when I realized it, about Pickett’s charge was that the 13,000 soldiers that Lee sent into the attack were just about every effective soldier he had left. I believe that he kept one division as a reserve, but that was all that he had left.

He did have probably an equivalent number or more of other remaining soldiers, but after three days of heavy fighting, they were exhausted, disorganized, unenthusiastic, and out of supplies.

Likewise, I’ll have no business with the yahoos that say the Army of the Potomac should have gone chasing after the Confederates on July 4. They had their victory the enemy was retreating and would never really threaten the US again. Meanwhile our own army was in equal shambles after the hardest 3 days of their lives.
