That quote gets him a lot of shit these days because people assume he meant killing civilians, but what he was talking about was actually property destruction.

Just a tiny nit to pick: Sherman didn’t say “War is Hell” he said “War is ALL Hell.” And yes, his army broke a bunch of stuff on the March to the Sea but they avoided slaughtering civilians.
