Actually, that’s pretty much the best argument as to why the GOP doesn’t deserve a majority in the Senate. They’ve spent the last year with their hands over their ears going “LA LALALALA can’t hear you” when it comes to Obama’s nominee and the multiple polls of voters telling them to vote on the nominee; now their basically going to say “aw fuck it, to one of like three jobs specifically laid out in the constitution for them? I seriously do not understand that logic - this is straight up, when you’re in a hole quit digging terrotiroy and instead they’re calling for a backhoe.

Moreover, Chuck Grassley stated long before Merrick Garland’s nomination that he didn’t think that President Obama (should the need come up) would nominate a worthwhile jurist like Merrick Garland.

Mitch McConnell is on record repeatedly stating nominations should be up to “the voters.”

So now, McCain gives away the real game: the GOP simply will not accept a nomination from a Democrat.

We cannot have a representative democracy if one political party chooses not to participate in democracy. The collapse of the GOP would be a good thing (major parties have collapsed before) if they cannot clean their own house; perhaps a new rational conservative party would rise to take their place, or perhaps an existing party (like the Libertarians) would do so.
