I honestly don’t think Bernie is a racist in the sense Trump is but I think he’s more like many Republicans are on race than Democrats in that he’s indifferent. Not much a defense nor intended to be.

True: Bernie seems to base his whole political shtick on the classic (but always-dubious and now, VERY old-hat) socialist analysis that “working-class anxiety” is virtually exclusively a matter of sheer economic interest, and that the less-savory aspects of said “anxiety” (and in America, those would be endemic racism, sexism, near-paranoid xenophobia, religious nuttery, etc) can be hand-waved away by appeals to “self-interest”. While ignoring the fact that for so (too) many of the “WWC”, self-interest isn’t a motivating political factor unless Somebody Else can be seen to suffer thereby.
