Jacob Chansley strikes me as a garden variety huckster who noticed it was getting a little crowded around the “Christian” carnival booth. He therefore decided to experiment with a different religion as a hook for his grift. He knows nothing about Shamanism but he figured that his audience is even more ignorant and it did indeed seem to work for a while.

Eh, I think he just wanted a good excuse to wear the horns and facepaint.
