Reading Livy and he mentions a Roman army being punished for getting carried away and taking an enemy and then its citadel when it hadn’t been ordered to do so. It may have been trumped up, Livy suspects so. The Consul who headed the army deprived it of the spoils instead remitting what he said was the value of them to the treasury.
