There was a lunar eclipse sometime during my childhood, and because the Stick Pile was ready to burn off, we actually did this - bonfire, banging pots and pans together, etc. The local cop dropped by because somebody’d called him that there were people dancing around a fire over at the Smiths’.

I remember the 1979 eclipse. I was in elementary school in L.A. for that one.
