Think what happened in 2000, the last time a Democrat who won the popular vote “lost” the electoral vote. If Elian Gonzalez mother had not made that fateful journey from Cuba, Bush would never have been President and Gore would have won the state with a sufficient margin, despite the widespread voter suppression. Something unexpected — that always seems more damaging to Democrats — seems to strike when we are running for the Presidency. Or perhaps, we are just not as effective in deflecting the bad news onto the other side.
