It’s part of Catholic doctrine, proclaimed at the 1st Vatican Council in 1870 (the same year as the Franco-Prussian War, BTW). It could not be be done away with without another council of the Church.
You know, I might be a severely lapsed Catholic, but it still irritates me somewhat when people get “our” doctrines wrong. Papal infallibility is probably the second-most misunderstood concept, after the immaculate conception.
As for Papa Ratzi being a Nazi…. look, I really don’t like the guy, but he was fucking 14. And yes, membership in the Hitler Youth was indeed mandated by law.
