A former Sandoval County deputy who was caught on camera slapping a 12-year-old has been charged by a special prosecutor with misdemeanor battery, according to Sandoval County Magistrate Court records.

In the video, Deputy Fred Switzer, 70, can be seen hitting the boy in the face while the juvenile was being transported to court. The incident happened on Aug. 24, 2015.

The Sandoval County Sheriff’s Office confirmed a supervisor witnessed the incident and reported it. Switzer was terminated as a result.

Switzer worked with the Sandoval County Sheriff’s Office for eight years. He also previously served with the Albuquerque Police Department.
