“Streets of Laredo” was an Irish song before it was a cowboy song.

Just looked it up, and that Irish ballad has been around since 1697. I have a feeling it may even have been passed down or picked up by Patrick Donnelly who it is claimed to have written it. It could be what is called a traditional song because it really has no one author, it has been built on for a long time.
