Trump’s polling slightly lower than his win, when he was relatively unknown, and hadn’t yet screwed a large number of people over. I think the numbers are about exactly where they actually are. There aren’t many ashamed to be Trump but still supporting him people. They’re either proud racists, or unaffected by his stances and don’t give a care what he does as long as it doesn’t affect them (I work mainly with the latter group).

Unfortunately, I don’t think this is true. I think that’s a substantial part of his support - probably people like you work with, who would answer in the negative on a poll and justify voting for him in private to themselves. Scratch the surface of anyone who’s ambivalent or appears unconcerned and you’ll find someone who’ll find a reason to vote Trump.
