Many Democrats are dropping the phrase “quid pro quo” because many Republicans seem to believe those exact words needed to appear in the call transcript in order for Trump to be guilty of a crime.

Also “quid pro quo” is the basics of contract law, something for something, basically. It is not, in and of itself, illegal/unlawful. What Trump did is better thought of as extortion. It can (and should) also be explained as failing to see the law is faithfully executed, which is what his oath of office includes. It is also (and should be) explainable as abandoning an ally in favor of an adversary to whom Trump seems to have a very strange fondness.
