Germany has since changed its laws so that anyone born in Germany to legal resident parents is automatically German.

They have not always been models of acceptance and tolerance, but I have found that they are moving in the right direction.

Nor will they extend their definition of “tolerance” to any culture that treats women as second-class citizens.

Yes, and it was definitely a good step forward and I agree that Germany is moving in the right direction, but the underlying prejudice is still there. I’d like to think that if it were put up to a vote, birthright citizenship in the US would still pass, but I’m beginning to doubt it.

I agree regarding the tolerance of cultures that treat women as second-class citizens. I wasn’t aware that Turkey treated women as such. When I checked, they even had more liberal abortion laws than some EU countries like Poland and Ireland, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that there weren’t other issues.
