It was. And nobody comes out looking good, except for Marty Balin from the Airplane, who tried to stop a Hell’s Angels beatdown and got knocked cold for his trouble.

The Stones looked particularly bad. It was their decision to hire the Angels and pay them with $500 worth of beer. I’m been in proximity to the HAs a lot of times, and that in itself was a sure recipe for disaster.

The Greatful Dead come out of it looking pretty bad too. They’re the ones who initially recommended the Angels for security, and then they decided to not play, leaving the audience to simmer for a couple of hours without music.

Apparently one of the fatal decisions was to hire the highly violent Fresno Angels instead of the more musician-friendly San Francisco Angels.
