This is really the issue. The Founding Fathers designed our system on the assumption of good faith by participants in the system, perhaps assuming that the country would always retain its idealism and fervor for Enlightenment. Question is, how do we redo it to account for bad faith, and then how do we get it through with the bad faith participants we have now?

If there were stiffer consequences for being assholes, some of the Republicans might not be so easily predisposed to doing asshole things.

Not a solution, I know. But perhaps part of one.
