Phony, not phoney. Phoney is when you speak nonsense on the phone a lot.
Assuming role play to be purposeful behaviour, it is inherently phony.
Can you explain why you ask?

To me, phony has negative connotations, but I didn’t think you meant it as ‘fraudulent or insincere’, but more ‘pretend’.
