Actually, we thought that for a while, but IIRC, we found out it’s not—Pluto is still the largest Kuiper-Belt object (slightly).
The real reason Pluto is not a planet is that if it isn’t a planet, then there are 8 planets. If it is a planet, then there are at least 200 planets, maybe many more. Who wants that?
