Over the years, I’ve tracked the arguments from an otherwise intelligent wingnut friend of mine. First, it was that there was a giant upwelling of warm water in the Gulf Stream that was causing the shift in ocean temperatures.

Then it was CO2 releases from Mount Erebus in Antarctica that was responsible for the uptick in greenhouse gases. And solar flares.

Now he lives in an area that is consistently flooding. Where humans have lived for more than 5,000 years. And his wife is an archeologist, so she knows how to read the records of human settlement patterns to point out that the waters are rising far beyond where they have EVER been.

Current line of reasoning: the planet’s climate is always changing. And we can’t do anything about it because shut up that’s why.

Did I mention that a large part of his income comes from working for the oil industry? Yeah, that just might be relevant.
