China does this sort of thing every time someone meets with the Dalai Lama or any official of the Taiwan government, usually expressing how the meetings “hurt the feelings” of the Chinese people. Since Cruz and Abbott are in Beijing’s eyes low-level functionaries, not much will come of the meeting. Had Pres. Tsai met with Trump, OTOH, there would have been hell to pay. There was some speculation there would be a meeting between them during her transit through NY, but apparently it did not come to pass.
