That’s the thing. They like to present that argument in a way that X person was a Republican and that means they would have agreed with the GOP platform of 2016. MLK who counted Bayard Rustin as a close friend wasn’t going to be fond of today’s GOP.. Just as George Wallace circa 1962 wouldn’t be fond of the Democrats of today. MLK was criticizing the Republicans for nominating Goldwater. The Republicans who supported Civil Rights deserve our thanks and respect but the RNC did not take the issue seriously. If they did, they wouldn’t have nominated Goldwater and Miller, both who opposed the CRA 1964 which MLK of course supported.

My impression was that George Wallace took up the mantle of racism only because it would get him elected. I don’t think he was a true believer in white supremacy — think of him like Trump on abortion — saying what was needed to retain power without any real conviction on the issue.
