I grew up on a farm. Both sides of the family were farmers. Went to a school where during recess, we’d wander over to the barbed-wire fence on the north side, next to the swings, and pet the cows who would gather there to stare at us and moo.

Rural farmers have spent the last 50 years being indoctrinated that the “damn gummint!” is the problem. That people who take gummint checks are the worst sort of scum. Freeloaders. Takers, not makers.

It is deeply humiliating for them to take handouts.
