OK, if you need it spelled out: rice is relatively cheap and abundant, but not particularly nutritious. Almonds are better food, healthier, they bring a better price. Everybody’s better off if several years of almond production are got instead of one year of rice. Because the rains will eventually resume, if not enough to sustain both rice and almond cultivation, and if the almond trees are dead by then, you lose the production for a long time.

In a world facing famine, you might have a point. But the world as a whole is now verging on an obesity epidemic. Rice is JUST A STAPLE.

And almonds are expensive! Many poor people will never eat almonds. They are not affordable for many. Rice, on the other hand…
