Yeah Carter I believe famously appeared with George Wallace and Coretta King. Definitely a weird map.

Before 1980, I think Texas had only gone to the Republicans like 3 or 4 times since the Civil War. But the realignment was likely underway by 1972, with 1976 being an outlier because of Watergate.
