How does that theory work?

The one that the South might have stayed independent had Nixon not ordered the coverup?

Did the invasion of the South not happen till the North it saw the US was too bogged down in internal problems to act?

the theory is that had Nixon’s bad actions in Watergate not first hobbled then destroyed his administration, the US could have provided South Vietnam wit the aid and air support it needed to keep the North from invading. Remember, the fall of the South in 1975 came not from a popular uprising but from a crushing blitzkrieg from the North.
