It’s incredible, truly. Growing up, when all we had were a few scattered shots from the Viking landers and, later, some orbital mapping photos, it looked so alien and terrifying. Spirit, Opportunity, and Curiosity have really brought the red planet closer to our level.

Mars is one of the few places in the solar system that can give us that feeling. The Moon and Mercury are too barren, and places like the moons of Jupiter and Saturn are too exotic to be mistaken as Earth-like.
