The truly insane bit is had Trump handled the pandemic in any semblance of semi competency, he would have easily won reelection. But his insane choice to purposefully make the pandemic as bad as possible for as many people as possible doomed his chances - killing 500,000+ Americans isn’t good for the resume of an American leader.

The real pity and frustration of all this is that his behavior, and that of the Republicans in support of it, should have led to a 30+ exile to the political wilderness for the party if not its outright extinction. With Trump being relegated to historical footnotes and a very high rating in the Worst Presidents Ever list.
