i wonder what would happen if the words ‘conservative’, ‘liberal’, ‘fascist’, ‘progressive’, ‘moderate’, & etc didn’t exist and we all had to describe our political positions in terms of actual policy detail

Most people adopt those terms to avoid critical thought. People on their own as individuals are much more interesting and nuanced but issues are complicated. Most of us have only a very basic understanding of economics or science. Social issues and demographics trends are complicated and solutions are often unpleasant realities. People adopt political labels to avoid thinking or learning, The labels come with a whole host of prepackaged solutions already made for us. Individuality is not required and is generally frowned upon.
