You can’t help but watch Quiet Man, it’s like one of those haunting “Irish” ballads from Tin Pan Alley. It’s full of wonderful character actors and of course Maureen, as well as full of endearing cliches of life in Ireland written for Americans. To me, Wayne is actually the weakest link in the film. I sometimes wonder what another, better actor (or movie star) would have done with the part: Mitchum, maybe, or a young Gable. I don’t even want to think about DeNiro.
I think Wayne was perfection in that role because he was John Wayne.
