It’s bizarre how many news orgs are screwing up the Hoffa quote today. Most aren’t even abridging with ellipses in a misleading way, they’re just outright reporting a quote that was never said. It makes it really hard not to conclude that a whole lot of journalists these days never even bother to watch firsthand what they’re reporting on, and instead regurgitate whatever they saw from their morning Drudge read.

For example, here’s ABC’s Ann Compton’s write up today:
abcnews.go.com

“President Obama, this is your army,” Hoffa concluded to applause, his voice raising to a shout. “We are ready to march. Let’s take these sons of bitches out and give America back to an America where we belong,” he said, stepping back from the lectern where President Obama would speak less than an hour later.

As we’ve seen elsewhere that bolded quoted sentence is actually an amalgam of the beginning and the end of an entire paragraph. It should be:

“We are ready to march. And, President Obama we want one thing – jobs, jobs, jobs, jobs, jobs, jobs, jobs, jobs. That’s what we’re going to tell him. When he sees what we’re doing here he will be inspired. But he needs help. And, you know what. Everybody here’s gotta vote. If we go back and keep the eye on the prize, let’s take these son of a bitches out and give America back to America where we belong.”

Oh, and apparently the trivial truly is king as far as modern journalism is concerned. Doing a quick scan of Politico I count at least 7 Tuesday Hoffa speech stories across their site…
