The further the Bushes - GHWB and GWB have gotten from the White House, the more circumspect they are about how their successors are doing - not willing to criticize and putting country first. Because they’ve been there. They know that being president is a thankless job and you’re going to get criticized no matter what - especially on foreign events beyond your actual control. They know there’s no magic wand that gives the US ability to act (or that the US should even act beyond issuing the usual statements about nonviolence, talks, and reconciliation where possible, and for dictators and despots to cease doing the despotic things that have kept them in power all along).
