Charles Ingalls was an incompetent shit. That much was obvious to me in the first book. But then I grew up on a farm in Wisconsin that my great grandfather carved out of virgin pine land shortly after the ACW. He managed to make things last a 150 years so why couldn’t better land alongside the Mississippi work? Feh.

I think a lot of that land along that stretch of the Mississippi is pure sand. A farmer friend of mine wasn’t impressed when we took a drive around Lake Pepin.
