Which is why Gap is voluntarily raising their starting wages, Walmart is now looking at increasing their minimum wage, and others are starting to get ahead of the curve. Gap is increasing their starting wages to $9 this year, and $10 next year.
Fact is that the higher wages will spur more spending by those folks, and reduce reliance on the safety net. Would it mean that government spending will be reduced overall? There’s going to be some offset with higher purchasing costs to governments and businesses, but the end result is that more people will be more well off than the current situation.
