Here’s another bit of GOP brilliance — forcing people on unemployment and who are looking for a job to work for free to keep their benefits:

Senate Republicans Would Require The Unemployed To Volunteer

I can see the problem with that, but I would really, really, love to teach a couple unemployed hedge fund managers how we shingle a Habitat house. In Alabama. In August.

But that’s not who you’d get, which removes even that little bit of benefit.

Instead… Hey, why should I start hiring when I can get xx employees for [unemployment] wages?

Here in Georgia, max unemployment is your gross weekly OR $330 per week. (yes, if you were earning more than $8.25 per week unemployment will be less.) Let’s see. Minimum wage is $7.25 per hour. 7.5% for social security and medicare, 6% for FUTA, is 13.5%, all for $8.19.

So if my employees get minimum wage I should just hire them. If I have to pay anything more than that I can be all noble and gove these “volunteers” an opportunity.
