I wasn’t too shocked. Romney needed someone who was popular with the conservative base. I thought Pawlenty while a possibility was unlikely since he’s as bland as Mitt. Ditto Portman and I think there was a worry that Portman could be tied to the Bush administration since he was Bush’s OMB director and later trade representative. I thought there was a possibility that it would be Rubio but I thought it unlikely since Mitt’s not the ambitious type. So, yeah Ryan made sense for me. I knew it would be an establishment white guy though regardless of who it was.
I think why it surprised me was because I honestly didn’t think that Willard would wish to tie himself to Ryan’s plan, for reasons that became obvious after the announcement.
